An agreement for the Establishment of University of Nur Mubarak in Almaty was reached during the visit of President Nazarbayev to in 1993. In June 1993, Almaty Local Authorities city had granted 6 hectares for the construction of the university in one of the main streets of the city. After finishing construction of the first phase in 2001 (about 20 million Egyptian pounds) ,the two governments had signed an agreement on the University's operation, in which it was agreed upon that the Egyptian side will be responsible for salaries of faculty staff.
The University teaches: Islamic Studies, the Arabic language and literature, translation from Arabic into Kazakh and Russian. There are about 16 Egyptian professors (level of PhD, Master, Bachelor) working in the university, in addition to the Head of University and the Dean. And from the Kazakh side, there are 17 professors from, as well as Deputy Head of the University.
In March 2006, it was agreed to begin the second phase of expansion of the university buildings during the Board of Trustees meeting in Almaty, headed by Egyptian Minister of Wakf , Dr. Mahmoud Hamdi Zaqzouq, the Kazakh Minister of Education. It is expected to finish construction of the second phase within few months ( 8 million USD dollars) .
We would also like to refer to the role of the in Almaty in strengthening the cultural cooperation between the two countries . The main tasks of the centre are to coordinate cooperation between the Egyptian and Kazakh universities, to select Kazakh candidates for the scholarships offered by the Egyptian side to study in , as well as supervising Egyptian students who study in to obtain PhDs. Besides organizing courses for the teaching of Arabic language and other cultural activities.
Egypt have sent 14 Envoys from Al-Azhar Al-Sharif to Kazakhstan starting from January 2010, in order to work in seven religious schools in different regions of Kazakhstan to train future Imams for Kazakh mosques .
provides 15 scholarships annually to to study in Al-Azhar Al-Sharif, besides existing students who study on their own expenses in Al -Azhar. Estimated number of Kazakh students in is about 250.
Egyptian Ministry of High Education provides 30 scholarships annually for Kazakh Students to study in Egyptian Universities.
