Egypt's Mufti Shawqi Allam has criticized extremists who try to spread misinformation about Islam in the society.
In his daily Ramadan sermon, Allam accused those extremists of misunderstanding the religion and seeking to force people to follow their wrong and twisted thoughts.
Allam stressed that Islam has nothing to do with misconceptions fanned by these extremist groups.
On contrast, Muslims have been ordered to respect followers of other religions and remain open to other cultures, Allam noted.
Islam is a religion that requires its followers to be good-mannered, polite, tolerant, benevolent and merciful to all people without discrimination and to respect the dignity of all mankind and understand and accept the traditions and customs of others so long as they are not prohibited by Allah, he said.
