Minister of Trade and Industry Niveen Gamea' issued a decision banning importing white sugar for three months except that used in the pharmaceutical industry.
In a statement on Thursday 4/6/2020, the Ministry of Trade and Industry said that the decision bans importing crude sugar during the next three months unless there is an official approval from the ministers of trade and industry and supply and internal trade.
Gamea' said that decision, that was issued after coordination with Minister of Supply and Internal Trade Ali el Meselhi, aims at protecting the national industry from the volatile changes in the global prices of sugar.
The move gives a chance to the sugar industry to recover from the damage caused by the decrease in global prices on the back of the pandemic crisis, she also said.
