Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry has addressed a letter to the French permanent representative to the Security Council, in his capacity as the current chairman of the UN body, about the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD)’s crisis.

“Given the gravity of the situation and in light of the continued intransigence of Ethiopia, which may pose a threat to international peace and security, I ask the UN Security Council to swiftly intervene in this issue,” Shoukry said in his letter.

He added that Egypt chose to refer this issue to the UN Security Council after it examined and exhausted each way to reach an amicable solution to that situation; via concluding an agreement on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam that preserves and promotes the rights and interests of the three Blue Nile riparian states.

Shoukry noted that Egypt's move comes after Ethiopia's insistence on filling the dam on a unilateral basis as of July, in contravention of its international legal obligations.
