Finance minister: We are resolved to update customs system

Minister of Finance Mohamed Maait has said that his ministry is going ahead with completing the national project for updating and automating customs department in a way that contributes to simplifying customs procedures, reducing commodity price costs and shortening the period of customs clearance.
In a statement issued by the ministry on Tuesday following the House of Representatives approval of the customs bill, the minister said that an electronic system will be established for tracking goods until the end of the final clearance phase and dealing with contracted goods with the possibility of applying pre-paid clearance system. He said the new law would facilitate customs procedures aimed at encouraging the national industry, reducing local production costs and magnifying competitiveness in international markets. It includes exempting government and teaching hospitals from duties levied on medical equipment, medicine, blood derivatives, sera and infant powder milk.
