In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful,
President of the General Assembly,
Secretary-General of the United Nations,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Today's celebration of the 25th anniversary of the adoption of the "Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action for Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment" is the culmination of the joint global efforts that have been exerted during the past period to protect, promote and empower women's rights on various political, economic and social levels. Women represent half of the society that should be taken care of to ensure the renaissance, reform and progress of the society as a whole and to achieve sustainable development.
Nationally, Egypt has taken, through the last period, firm steps to achieve equality and women empowerment. Last year, Egypt celebrated the 100th anniversary of Egyptian women’s participation in public life. Moreover, it was one of the first states in the world to set a national strategy to empower women politically, economically and socially as well as provide them protection. Furthermore, the legislative framework related to women has been developed through approving a number of new legislations as well as amending the existing ones. Thus, ensure full equality and equal opportunities to Egyptian women and support their effective participation in community-based action without any discrimination. Furthermore, women’s protection is ensured against all shapes of violence, harassment and they are provided care in various stages of their lives.
These efforts have yielded many positive results, including a 25% increase in the percentage of women representation in the Cabinet and in the Egyptian parliament. Egyptian women have also held the position of judges and other several important positions, including the provincial governor and the national security advisor.
Moreover, Egypt is keen on international and regional cooperation, through participation in all initiatives related to empowering and upgrading the conditions of women. It currently hosts the headquarters of the Arab Women Organization of the League of Arab States (LAS-AWO). Likewise, it is honored to be chosen to host the headquarters of the Women’s Development Organization of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). It is a promising new entity which is scheduled to go live during the coming period, and is going to be concerned with advancing the role of women, ensuring their empowerment, and achieving gender equality within the framework of joint Islamic action. Furthermore, Egypt is going to chair the OIC Ministerial Conference on Women during the next biennium.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Egypt assures the importance of enhancing the participation of women and their effective contribution to peace negotiations and peace building. Egypt also exerts its utmost efforts to help in implementing Women, Peace and Security Agenda. Egypt has actively participated in the formulation of the Arab regional strategy to implement the Security Council (SC) Resolution No. 1325, within the framework of the Arab League (AL) to commensurate with the Arab region needs. The most important of which is working on stopping the suffering of the Palestinian women in the occupied Palestinian territories and enhancing women’s role in combating terrorism and extremist ideas.
In May 2019, Egypt announced the beginning of formulating the first National Action Plan (NAP) on Women, Peace and Security agenda to be a culmination of Egyptian women’s contribution to the efforts of peacemaking, peacekeeping and peace building.
Finally, gender equality, empowerment of women as well as maintaining her rights are the basic pillars to ensure the awakening of human societies and realize sustained development.
Undoubtedly, full maintenance and protection of human rights cannot be achieved without protection of women’s rights and empowerment in accordance to related international covenants and conventions.
From this place, I call on everyone to sincerely and effectively participate to ensure full implementation of Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action.
