Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry arrived in Moscow on Tuesday 27/10/2020 where he participated in a ministerial meeting bringing together the top diplomats and ministers of water resources of Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.
Shoukry will have talks with Russian officials on bilateral relations and coordination vis-a-vis regional issues of mutual concern, especially pertaining to Middle East peace efforts and the Libyan, Syrian, Yemeni and Lebanese crises, it added.
The virtual Egypt-Sudan-Ethiopia meeting was called by South Africa, the current chair of the African Union, with the aim of relaunching negotiations on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), which have been suspended since late August, the Ministry also said in its statement.
Shoukry's participation in this meeting asserts Egypt's readiness to engage in effective and serious negotiations with the two Nile Basin countries to implement resolutions taken at meetings of the African Union Bureau at the summit level, the statement read.
The resolutions have directed Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia to negotiate in order to conclude a binding legal agreement on filling and operating the dam in order to achieve their common interests and secure their water rights, according to the statement.
