In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate and the Most Merciful
Honorable Grand Imam of Al-Azhar,
Revered Muslim Scholars and Imams,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
May Allah’s Peace, Mercy and Blessings Be Upon You,
Today, we celebrate the birthday anniversary of our Holy Prophet, Muhammad (PBUH), whose wisdom and gentle preaching has laid valuable and everlasting foundations and pillars for the whole humanity. I congratulate the honorable Egyptians and all Arab and Muslim peoples on this prodigious memory, praying to Allah to bring about many happy returns, goodness, peace and blessings of the day to the Egyptian people and government.
Today’s celebration of the birthday of the best well-mannered of all mankind and the Holy Prophet of Mercy (PBUH) arouses all senses of clemency in our Holy righteous religion and reminds us that the tolerant Islam’s Sharia has been based on construction rather than destruction. This outlined what Allah, the Almighty, says: "We have not sent you, [O Muhammad], except as a mercy to the worlds". Undoubtedly, the word “worlds” bears all meanings of universality, comprehensiveness, and inclusiveness. It is well-known that the objectives of religions are based on realizing the interests of the country and the benefit of the people through tolerance and ease, rather than radicalism, extremism or restrictiveness.
Hence, the issue of rational awareness and understanding of the authentic religion will continue to be among the priorities of the current stage in facing the evildoers who distort texts’ meanings and take them out of their context. They also explain texts according to their aims or rely on misinterpretations. This requires us to continue the mission and the heavy responsibility carried out by the scholars to correct false interpretations to protect the society and the state from the subversive agenda. Let the whole world realize the tolerance of the Holy Islam that is based on forbearance and peaceful coexistence among all people.
Undoubtedly, rational awareness requires synergy of all religious, educational, cultural and information institutions to collaborate in building the normal strong character that is able to face challenges and distinguish between right and wrong, good and false governance, as well as facts and rumors.
Appreciating the role assumed by the state's religious institutions in spreading enlightened thought and rectifying misconceptions, I stress that we need to double the effort exerted by all institutions and the awareness-building system to reach all segments of society at this critical stage in the history of our nation, our region, and the world around us. I also stress that the state will not spare any effort in supporting and providing the Imams with the appropriate climate to perform the desired role in the current stage of Egypt's history so as to support the enlightened moderate religious discourse.
Allah, the Almighty, has gifted us with the intellect that distinguished and honored mankind over all other creatures. Allah, the Exalted, asked us, using this great gift, to explore and contemplate the components of kingdoms of the heavens and the earth; in terms of accuracy, creativity, and precision. Moreover, He, the Almighty, has ordained to preserve this unique blessing, and has forbidden resorting to myths, delusions, or destructive ideas with blind fanaticism or submissive compliance that robs the will and the ability to think, create, work or produce.
Furthermore, the message of Islam received from the Holy Prophet was a triumph of freedom of faith, choice, belief, and free thinking. Yet, those freedoms were not unconditionally absolute; so that human whims would not turn them into chaos that allows vandalism and destruction. Moreover, those freedoms should stand at the limits of other freedoms, respect all and do not get out of the precise system in which Allah, the Almighty, has created the universe within its fame. However, preserving the rights of others is not considered a restriction on freedoms. Additionally, justifying extremism under the guise of religion is furtherly away from the teachings of the religion; however, it is forbidden and is a mere tool realizing narrow interests and personal objectives.
Let us agree that such extremism cannot be limited to a specific religion. Unfortunately, there are extremists in all religions, who seek to stoke the spirit of sedition and inflame anger and hatred. These malicious doctrines only fuel the discourse of rivalry and provoke estrangement and discordance. Moreover, the prophet’s holy biography was not free from extremism. I assure everyone that the status of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), the best of all mankind, is in the hearts and consciences of all Muslims throughout the world, and cannot be affected by any word or action. I also affirm the categorical denunciation of any act of violence or terrorism from any party under the slogan of defending religion or sacred religious symbols; the essence of religion is tolerance and forbearance. In this context, lessons should have been learnt from the life of our Prophet (PBUH) who was sent by Allah, the Almighty, to complement the honorable morals. In this vein, our Prophet (PBUH) has laid down the foundations of coexistence, mutual acceptance and belief in diversity; thus, there is no compulsion in matters of faith or religion.
In conclusion, let us make the birth anniversary of our gracious Prophet (PBUH), a beacon that guides our way to rehabilitate and realize the true meaning of mercy in the face of murder and sabotage groups. Hence, our nation renders a shining image of the right-track understanding and application of our righteous religion and the genuine objectives of Islamic Sharia. Therefore, we can send a message from Egypt, the cradle of history and human civilization, assuring the tolerance of the religions, and paving the way to peace all over the world and mercy for all humanity.
Many happy returns of the day,
May our dear Egypt be always in progress and prosperity,
May Allah’s Peace, Mercy and Blessings Be upon You.
