In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate and the Most Merciful
Ladies and Gentlemen,
I would like to thank my dear friend, His Excellency President Emanuel Macron, for hosting the Second Lebanon Donor Conference in participation with the United Nations (UN). The Conference is being held in light of the hard challenges encountered by the Lebanese people. Furthermore, it sends a new message from friendly states of their will to work together to support, and enhance security and stability of Lebanon and its people to return back to its former prosperity.
Egypt had and is still following the repercussions of the Beirut Port disaster on political, economic and humanitarian levels.
Since the very first moment of this catastrophic tragedy, Egypt, arising out of its responsibilities towards Arab brothers, took the initiative to provide all forms of aid and assistance to Lebanon via an airlift and a sealift to transfer massive humanitarian and food aid to compensate Lebanon for the losses of its strategic necessary food stuff stock pile. This support came to complement the efforts of the Egyptian Field Hospital in Beirut, which provides daily medical services to the Lebanese people. Since inauguration last January, the hospital has received more than 80,000 cases.
Egypt's efforts were not merely limited to government contributions, but also religious institutions participated in providing support to Lebanon as well. Both Al-Azhar Al-Sharif and the Egyptian Churches provided dozens of tons of various food and medical aid, in addition to sending specific in-kind aids to contribute to the efforts exerted to refurbish the buildings afflicted by the explosion.
We cannot fail to point to the fact that these harsh conditions in Lebanon coincide with the exceptional circumstances that our world is witnessing nowadays; represented in the successive waves of the Coronavirus pandemic and the heavy burdens it has placed, in terms of quantity and quality, on the whole world and the countries of the region. Thereupon, Egypt provided two batches of a drug for treating the Coronavirus to the Lebanese side to face the effects of the pandemic, thus relieving the pressure on the brotherly Lebanese people.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
We may sometimes disagree in our appreciation to the conditions of Lebanon, but we all agree on the importance of standing by the Lebanese people in these successive difficult circumstances.
The real challenge that Lebanon is facing now is the suffering of the state’s political stalemate. So, I invite all the Lebanese leaders to uphold Lebanon’s national interest, settle disputes, and accelerate the efforts of forming an independent government able to deal with the current challenges. Moreover, I invite them to maintain the capabilities of the brotherly Lebanon people, and unify its national fabric to prevent the entry of vicious cycle of successive crises. As the international society is fully aware of its responsibility towards Lebanon, so, every Lebanese must be aware of the challenges facing his country and spare no effort to do his duty especially that Lebanon’s security and stability are threatened again. Thus, it is necessary to distance Lebanon from regional tensions and conflicts. In addition, Lebanon must focus its efforts to support and strengthen the state’s institutions to carry out its national responsibility in achieving Lebanon’s stability.
I would like to seize this opportunity to reiterate that our conference today is a message to all Lebanese politicians that the international community is ready to support Lebanon as soon as a new government is formed with expertise, integrity and without the logic of quotas and political alignment. It is a demand expressed by the various sects of the Lebanese people, so the only solution for the Lebanese crisis is meeting the legitimate demands of the brotherly Lebanese people and restoring the confidence of the Arab and international community in a way that allows the resumption of support for Lebanon and its transition from the stage of humanitarian support to the stage of economic support.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Finally, I would like to reiterate my thanks for the French government for the initiative to hold this significant conference in coordination with the UN and to assure the readiness of Egypt to support Lebanon and its brotherly people in facing all these challenges. I would like to extend my sincere hope for Lebanon to surpass this harsh condition thanks to the unity of its leaders and the coherence of its people.
