Shoukri: Egypt adopts balanced strategy in dealing with migration issue
Thursday، 25 February 2021 - 02:51 PM
Minister of Foreign Affairs Sameh Shoukri said that Egypt’s migration policies are based on a balanced strategic vision encompassing the perspective of being a county of origin, transit and destination.
In a recorded statement he addressed Thursday 25/2/2021 to the inauguration ceremony of the First Arab Region Review of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM), Shoukri said the Egypt's vision runs in tandem with the GCM's dimensions; being the first inter-governmentally negotiated agreement addressing international migration.
He said that the GCM deals with migration issues according to an overall perspective that takes developmental aspects into consideration, together with the importance of addressing, as well as rooting out causes prompting migration, thus goes far beyond addressing security-related aspects that mainly have to do with border management.
Shoukri said the convocation of the conference after more than two years of adopting the GCM's recommendations is a propitious chance to stand on challenges, opportunities and successful models of Arab states in this regard.
He noted that the gathering is a platform for promoting coordinated action among regional states in the migration sphere,
towards the pursuit of implementing best policies related to international migration agreements, especially that collaborative moves are essential on this score.
The two-day event is co-organized by the United Nations (UN) Economic and Social Commission of West Asia (ESCWA), the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Arab League (AL) in collaboration with the Regional United Nations Network on Migration in the Arab Region.
The conference will be concluded by the presentation of the key messages and recommendations that emanated from the two-day discussions.
The UN system, through the regional Network on migration, is committed to supporting all partners in putting into effect the GCM which is a cooperative framework that provides an invaluable tool for ensuring that migration benefits all.
