Egypt, AFDB sign EUR 109 mln agreement to provide sanitation services in Luxor

The Ministry of International Cooperation and Africa Development Bank (AFDB) have signed a funding agreement worth 109 million euros to provide sanitation services in residential complexes that are situated in rural areas of Luxor governorate.
The deal, which comprises a loan of 108 million euros and a one-million-euro grant, comes within the context of the International Cooperation Ministry's role in facilitating coordination between bilateral and multilateral development partners and different government bodies to provide the necessary funding for implementing projects that directly benefit citizens and support the national development agenda, said a statement by the ministry on Thursday 04/03/2021.
On this occasion, International Cooperation Minister Rania el Mashat said that strategic ties between her ministry and the AFDB contributed to making funding available for development projects in various sectors.
She added that the International Cooperation Ministry is keen on coordinating with bilateral and multilateral development partners to provide full support for projects that are being executed in the sector of drinking water and sanitation, with a view to improving water resources management.
Mashat went on to say that development partners provided a funding worth USD 1.4 billion in 2020 to establish projects in the sectors of housing, as well as water and sanitation networks.
On his part, Minister of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities Assem El Gazzar said that some 400,000 citizens and 30,000 farmers in Luxor are due to benefit from this project, which will be carried out by the Holding Company for Water and Wastwater (HCWW).
He added that the project is in line with the Presidential initiative (Decent Life) to develop Egyptian villages, through supplying them with sanitation services in three years.
Meanwhile, Director of AfDB's Country Office Malin Bloomberg said that she was happy to continue joint work with the International Cooperation Ministry and government bodies in Egypt to provide funding for development projects.
She added that the targeted project is part of the state's strategy to achieve sustainable development and provide clean water and sanitation services in Upper Egyptian governorates.
