Suez Canal expansion project not to affect navigation - SCA chief

Saturday، 15 May 2021 - 11:10 PM

Chairman of the Suez Canal Authority (SCA) Osama Rabie said Saturday 15/05/2021 the planned expansion project would not harm navigation in the waterway.

The SCA plans to widen the southernmost 30-kilometre stretch of the waterway between the city of Suez and the Bitter Lakes area by 40 metres eastwards. It also plans to deepen that section to 72 feet from 66 feet.

A second canal lane that opened in 2015 north of the Great Bitter Lake to allow two-directional traffic would also be extended by 10km on the southern side of the lake, to reach a total length of 82 km and allowing more ships to pass.

The project will increase the number of ships inside the canal to six ships and reduce the transit time in both directions.

President Abdel Fattah El Sisi has shown unlimited support to the Suez Canal Authority, and is following up work in the authority around the clock, Rabie said.

The project should be completed in 24 months at most, he added.
