Presidential Adviser for Health Affairs Mohamed Awad Tageldine said President Abdel Fattah El Sisi attaches importance to locally manufacturing COVID-19 vaccines regardless of costs and profits.
In statements to Sabah El Khair Ya Masr (Good Morning Egypt)'s TV program on Tuesday, the presidential adviser said that the COVID-19 pandemic brought about political and economic changes to the whole world, which proved that strong support and self-reliance are essential.
Egypt has centers that could manufacture COVID-19 vaccines, he said. Egypt is working on two directions; the first is securing vaccines in large quantities and the second is manufacturing vaccines and exporting the surplus to countries suffering from shortage of vaccines, including African countries, he noted.
Egypt is currently holding negotiations with companies from the public and private sectors to manufacture coronavirus vaccines, he added.
Several companies have already concluded contracts to manufacture coronavirus vaccines, including the Russian-made vaccine, under the supervision of the Egyptian Drug Authority, Tageldine said.
He further noted that 2 million citizens will be vaccinated soon, stressing that so far, no side effects have been observed on those who have received the vaccine.
