Xinhua: Egypt implements clear strategy for turning into regional hub for green energy production

Egyptian officials said the government implements a clear strategy for turning the country into a regional hub for green energy production and export, noting it has achieved significant progress in generating electricity from several resources.

Recently, Egypt has signed a series of deals with global companies for green hydrogen production in the Suez Canal Economic Zone, including India's ReNew Power, Norway's Scatec, Germany's H2-Industries, and Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar).

These companies pledged to pump investments amounting to over $40 billion in the field of green hydrogen production by 2030 a step that will go in parallel with Egypt's starting the establishment of its first nuclear plant to generate 4,800 megawatts.

In this regard, Ayman Hamza, the spokesman for the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy, told Xinhua that Egypt's production of renewable energy will exceed 10,000 megawatts in 2023, mentioning outstanding projects like the Benban Solar Park in Aswan, the fourth largest solar energy complex in the world in terms of production capacity. The park generates 1,465 megawatts which could be increased to 2,000 megawatts after its expansion.

Egypt seeks to maximize the use of renewable energy through green hydrogen projects, as a large number of memoranda of understanding have been signed with international companies to produce green hydrogen and green ammonia in Egypt, in addition to strengthening the local manufacture of electrolysers that are key devices for the production of green hydrogen, Hamza noted.

The spokesman pointed out that a project to produce green ammonia will be announced in conjunction with the UN climate conference, COP27, in November.

He also added that Egypt is on the right track toward building El Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant, pointing to the beginning of the concrete pouring operations for the infrastructure of Unit 1.
