Environment Minister Yasmine Fouad launched a plastic cleaning initiative in the Red Sea resort city of Sharm El Sheikh.

The cleaning initiative was funded by the Swiss government, the European Union and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).

This came within the framework of a campaign for eliminating single-use plastic bags as the countdown for the 27th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27) started.

This came during the minister's visit to Sharm el Sheikh within the framework of a series of visits to the city to stand on the latest developments in preparing for COP27 and ongoing efforts to turn it to a green city.

She said turning Sharm el Sheikh into a green city is not just a slogan, but this will be applied on the ground.

Under the campaign, 1000 eco-friendly bags were distributed for free among citizens in addition to mobile vehicles roaming the city to spread awareness among people and shops about means of using alternatives for virgin plastic bags.

The campaign also launched awareness campaign on social media on the dangers of using single plastic bags.
