Minister of Finance Mohammed Maait 30,000 Egyptian expatriates registered over the past two weeks on the Egyptians Expats Cars app, which will allow them to apply to import cars for personal use without paying customs.
Interviewed by Al Arabiya, Maait said the initiative witnessed a high turnout by Egyptians abroad since its launching on November 15.
He said initial estimates pointed out that the number of applicants will range between 500,000 to one million over the period of the initiative that will continue for four months, asserting that Egyptians' demand on the application is on the rise.
According to the Egyptian Customs Authority, the initiative started on 15 November and will continue for four months, ending on 14 March 2023.
On 14 November, the Egyptian government published the executive regulations for the initiative’s law that was ratified by President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi in October.
Under the new law, Egyptians 16 and above who have both valid residence permits in a different country and bank accounts opened at least three months previously are entitled to import one private passenger car for their personal use.
The law also applies to Egyptians with dual citizenship.
