President El-Sisi Receives Mauritanian Counterpart

President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi received, 4-6-2023,  President of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, Mohamed Ould Cheikh El-Ghazaouani, at Cairo International Airport, at the start of the Mauritanian President’s three-day visit to Egypt.




Upon their arrival at Al-Ittihadiya Palace, an official reception ceremony was held during which the guard of honor were inspected and the national anthems of both countries were played.




President El-Sisi and the Mauritanian President held a bilateral session of talks, followed by an expanded meeting attended by the two countries’ delegations.



The two Presidents valued the ongoing development in Egyptian-Mauritanian relations, as well as the steady progress in the longstanding historical bonds between the two countries over the past years across all levels, particularly in the military and security aspects as well as in counter-terrorism efforts in the Sahel region.




President El-Sisi and President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El-Ghazaouani discussed ways to strengthen economic cooperation, increase trade and boost bilateral investments during the coming period. The Mauritanian President lauded the Egyptian development experience, expressing appreciation for the support and capacity building for the brothers in Mauritania that Egypt provides in all areas.

An agreement was reached to convene the Joint High Committee at the level of foreign ministers next July, during which a number of cooperation agreements in an array of areas will be signed. This shall enhance the frameworks of cooperation as well as the Egyptian-Mauritanian partnership for the benefit of the two peoples.


During their talks, the two Presidents exchanged views on mechanisms for further advancing joint Arab and African action, and discussed the latest developments in a number of regional issues, notably Sudan, Libya, Syria and the Renaissance Dam.


After talks, President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi and his Mauritanian counterpart, Mohamed Ould Cheikh El-Ghazaouani, held a press conference at Ittihadiya Palace.

President El- Sisi expressed huge appreciation for the profound historical bonds Egypt shares with Mauritania, in light of the brotherly relations between the two countries and their peoples.

He also welcomed Mauritanian President in his second country, Egypt saying: “I held intensive and constructive discussions with President El-Ghazaouani, during which we tackled various bilateral, regional and international issues. Our consultations have demonstrated our shared political will to strengthen the outstanding relations between the two countries, and promote them in an array of areas toward broader prospects by invigorating the frameworks of cooperation and coordination across all levels. This shall take into consideration the common challenges facing Egypt and Mauritania, including the challenges to achieve comprehensive development, counter foreign interference in the region, combat terrorism and extremist ideology and preserve the nation-state and its institutions.”

Mr. President added: “we agreed on further advancing cooperation in the economic, investment and trade fields, and on expediting the convening of the second round of the Egyptian-Mauritanian High Joint Committee this year. This aims to serve efforts toward fostering closer relations, deepening the bilateral partnership between the two countries, and strengthening frameworks of cooperation and coordination with regard to all issues of mutual concern”.




In his speech during the joint press conference with President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi at the Ittihadiya Palace, Mauritanian President highlighted the high status Egypt enjoys in the hearts of Mauritanians, showcasing the prominent role Egypt played and still plays in handling the major issues facing both the Arab and Islamic nations.

He added: "We should all be proud of those achievements, given that the strength of Egypt is a strength to the [Arab] nation…If Egypt is in good shape, we all are."
The Mauritanian president thanked his Egyptian counterpart for the invitation to visit Cairo, and congratulated the Egyptian people on the great achievements accomplished under President Sisi.
