The ISPRS Geospatial Week (GSW 2023)
Sunday، 03 September 2023 - 12:00 AM
Under the auspices of H.E. Secretary General of the League of Arab States and with the patronage of H.E. Prof. Dr. Mostafa Madbouly - Prime Minister of Egypt, The Arab Academy for Science, Technology, and Maritime Transport (AASTMT) is hosting the International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS) first Geospatial Week (GSW) in Africa and Middle East in Egypt, 2023, under the title: “Remote Sensing for a Better Future”, during the period from 2 - 7 September 2023, at the Intercontinental Semiramis Hotel, Cairo – Egypt.
The International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS) is founded in 1910. It is a nongovernmental organization devoted to the development of international cooperation for the advancement of photogrammetry and remote sensing and their applications.
The ISPRS is a combination of workshops organised by about 30 ISPRS Working Groups active in areas of interest of ISPRS. The GSW provides a platform for international scholars, graduate students, future scientists and industrial sectors to learn exchange knowledge and experiences of applying geospatial technologies for sustainable development for better quality of life for people around the world.
About GeoSpatial Week (GSW)
The GSW is an internationally renowned scientific event held once every two years. The event represents more than 30 International Society of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS) Working Groups, and aims to bring together expertise in the fields of Space, remote sensing, AI, digital transformation and GIS. About 2000 researchers and professionals from around the world gather for an entire week to share new findings and experiences through a series of dedicated workshops.
The GSW’2023 will have a number of workshops on the following sub-themes that represent that state of the art and future trends in GeoSpatial Technologies:
1. MMT and HDMaps - Mobile Mapping Technologies and HDMaps
2. IAMS - Intelligent and autonomous mapping systems
3. SARcon 2023 - SAR constellations and applications
4. Robotics for Mapping - SLAM approaches for mobile mapping and robot intelligence
5. Semantics3D - Semantic Scene Analysis and 3D Reconstruction from Images and Image Sequences
6. 3DS Smart Cities - 3D Sensing for Smart Cities
7. AI-PC: AI-based Point Cloud and Image Understanding

The opening activities were attended by H.E. Prof. Dr. Ayman Ashour - Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, H.E. Prof. Dr. Naser El-Sheimy- President of the Conference, H.E. Prof. Dr. Ismail Abdel Ghafar Ismail Farag - AASTMT President, in addition to leaders from Egyptian research centers, the Egyptian General Survey Authority, the General Authority for Survey and Geospatial Information in Saudi Arabia, Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre, the National Telecom Regulatory Authority, the Egyptian Space Agency, the National Authority for Remote Sensing & Space Sciences, the Agriculture Bank of Egypt and Abu Qir Fertilizers Company.
In his speech, the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Ayman Ashour said that our ultimate goal is to utilize science, research, and innovation to achieve the development goals of the Egyptian people. This is why we are interested in emerging technologies and the development of laws and regulations that can accelerate and facilitate the attainment of these goals through the use of such technologies.
He underlined that the GSW provides a platform for international scholars, graduate students, future scientists and industrial sectors to learn exchange knowledge and experiences of applying geospatial technologies for sustainable development for better quality of life for people around the world.
For his part, H.E. Prof. Dr. Ismail Abdel Ghafar Ismail Farag - AASTMT President said: “As we celebrate our 50th anniversary, the Arab Academy for Science, Technology, and Maritime Transport (AASTMT) is honored to host the ISPRS first Geospatial Week in Africa and Middle East in 2023 (GSW-2023) that will be held under the auspices of H.E Secretary-General of the League of Arab States. The conference will be held in September 2023, at the InterContinental Cairo City stars Cairo, Egypt. AASTMT strongly believes that science is the key to the future and the cornerstone for nations’ progress and prosperity. It is the primary factor for human achievements throughout all ages. AASTMT has a host of qualified professors and experts who are capable of supporting Arab and African countries in various scientific fields. The GSW will provide a platform for international scholars, graduate students, future scientists and industrial sectors to learn exchange knowledge and experiences of applying geospatial technologies for sustainable development for better quality of life for people around the world. We would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to Cairo a vibrant, exhilarating, exotic, fascinating and welcoming city. Home to the best Pharaonic, Coptic and Islamic sights in Egypt. Cairo is where you never know what incredible, half-forgotten monument you might stumble across while wandering around. Enjoy the Nile view, visit the great pyramids of Giza, walk through the capital's medieval markets by Khan El-Khalili, or walk down the Nile promenade. We look forward to working with the ISPRS council, commissions presidents, working group officers, and other sister organizations to have a successful technical program and a memorable social program. It is great to have the GSW coming to Egypt where most probably the first mapping systems were developed 1000s years ago. Welcome to GSW’2023 in Cairo, Egypt.”
