Port Said Day
Saturday، 23 December 2000 - 12:00 AM
On the 23rd of December, Egypt celebrates the anniversary of the Victory Day, which is considered the National Day of Port Said Governorate. On that day, the Egyptian people and army repelled the British, French and Israeli tripartite aggression.
The tripartite aggression came in reply to Egypt’s nationalization of the Suez Canal on July 26th, 1956, which aimed at making use of the Canal’s revenues in building the High Dam.
The aggression was a failure due to the cooperation between the Egyptian people and army. Pressures of the world public opinion brought Britain and France to withdraw their troops on December 23rd, 1956, the which became the National Day of Port Said.
Since then, Port Said has been in progress, especially after 6th of October War, 1973. It has become a free zone and is about to start the implementation of several projects in the fields of tourism and industry including the large free zone in the east sub-canal, which will be a main source of foreign currency.
