The Cabinet at a meeting on Wednesday 17/9/2014 under Prime Minister Ibrahim Mahlab approved a draft law on setting up an authority for development and use of new and renewable energy.
The authority will have the status of a public department and will answer to the minister of electricity.
It will be in charge of setting up projects for new and renewable power generation. The move comes within the framework of the government's policy for diversifying resources of power production and maintaining the environment against carbon emission.
In the same vein, the government has endorsed amendments to a law on al-Azhar. Under the amended law, staffers may lose their jobs if they:
- Take part in or lobby for protests that hinder the educational process,
- Allow weapons, ammunition or explosives on campus,
- Deliberately damage university facilities,
- Give private lessons to students,
- Carry out actions that contradict the genuine teachings of Islam.
The amended law also allows the president of al-Azhar University to dismiss students who help or participate in acts of sabotage, have weapons on campus, hinder the educational process or incite violence.
This, however, should follow an investigation by the university within seven days of any incident.
Students should be informed of the outcome of the probe.
